SPIRE is currently analyzing the largest database of cases of children with diarrhea who came to hospitals and needed drips and medicines. Pakistan has one of the highest number of infants and children dying of dehydration and other complications of acute gastroenteritis. There is very poor awareness among communities and ever poorer clinical practices when it comes to children with diarrhea and dehydration. Incorrect and dangerous use of antibiotics in children with dehydration can be life threatening and lead to serious dehydration, shock and even death. We have accumulated more than 800 such cases in a database. We hope to publish our research paper by end of December 2023.

SPIRE is very pleased to announce that we have completed our research project with Gandhara University in Peshawar, KP. SPIRE collaborated with the research team from Gandhara University and completed the largest study on children less than five years who suffer from acute watery diarrhea and receive antibiotics. It is well known that antibiotics are not indicated in children with acute watery diarrhea. Our research found that more than half of such children receive antibiotic even before they visit a hospital. We will be proceeding to publish these findings in near future. - First paper is submitted for publication from a database of 700 children with Acute watery diarrhea.
- Second manuscript is now being prepared.
- SPIRE-GASTRO will remain open for cases through 2024. Collaborating institutions can add cases and participate in publications.
