SPIRE-HEART
SPIRE-Heart KP-001/23
This project is the first of its kind and size in the entire province of KP. This is also the largest study of its kind in Pakistan.
SPIRE-HEART aims to To develop a database of children less than 5 years age presenting with possible diagnosis of acquired myocarditis to tertiary care hospitals in KP, Pakistan. As outlined in the attached literature review and project proposal, Pakistan has no data for the thousands of children diagnosed with acquired myocarditis, till date. Lack of data is a serious deficiency when one wants to develop treatment protocols, clinical interventions and even awareness campaigns.
SPIRE-HEART started in early 2023. We have enrolled pediatric cardiologists and pediatricians from ten healthcare institutions through MOUs between NEAD-SPIRE and the respective institutions. We have also enrolled seven independent researchers who will work with SPIRE in data collection and data analysis.
SPIRE MOU
This is the Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration between NEAD-SPIRE and other healthcare institutions, who reach a mutual agreement to work together in the SPIRE-HEART project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, KP, Pakistan. It can be downloaded from here and sent to the email address given in the MOU.

Research Questionnaire
This is the research questionnaire of the SPIRE-HEART project. It was developed after extensive consultation and research in collaboration with experts in the field of pediatric cardiology and research.
The questionnaire is declared ethically and linguistically sound and fair by the Institutional Research Boards of SIX major hospitals in KP and by the expert panel of NEAD-SPIRE collaboration.
Patient Information and Consent is translated into Urdu and Pashto so that the questionnaire can be applied to a large sub-group of the population in KP who are an ethnically and linguistically diverse group. Training to apply the questionnaire will be given to all the participating institutions by the team at SPIRE. All data obtained from this questionnaire will be stored at the NEAD-SPIRE office in Peshawar and kept locked till the study is completed in Jan 2025. Members of NEAD-SPIRE with access to the database will be anonymizing the names of institutions and the individual investigators to protect privacy of study workers and institutions.
Here is the Questionnaire of SPIRE-HEART Project
NEAD-SPIRE have enrolled eight major healthcare institutions in this project so far, making it the first of its kind and the largest multi-center study undertaken in KP, till date. Participating institutions will have full publication rights and access to the largest database of children with acquired myocarditis, a very serious disease of the heart with high rate of death and disability.
We encourage you to become a collaborator in this project and be a part of an unprecedented research effort.
SPIRE- HEART POTENTIAL RESEARCH PROJECTS
Given here is a tabulated infogram of potential research projects that can be performed by the participating institutions/individuals once the SPIRE-HEART project database is complete. It is easy to see the research and publication potential of this project. Starting from simple surveys about basic information related to acquired myocarditis, we can design interventional trails based on information collected in the SPIRE-HEART project.
SPIRE- HEART UPDATES
Manuscript prep has started with the first 100 cases of suspected myocarditis admitted last year in three Category-B Hospitals in KP. SPIRE-HEART is the largest database of such cases in KP.
